Because of a strained abdominal muscle, the organizers of the Twenty20 World Cup announced on Monday that Afghanistan's hard-hitting opening batsman, Hazratullah Zazai, will not be able to play in the remaining matches of the competition. Zazai was one of the players who helped Afghanistan win the tournament in 2013.

Zazai will be replaced in Afghanistan's 15-player squad for the tournament in Australia by travelling reserve Gulbadin Naib. The competition will take place in Australia. The land down under is going to play host to the competition.

After three matches, Afghanistan only has two points to show for its participation in Group One of the Super 12 stage. This places Afghanistan in last place. They were defeated by England, and their matches with New Zealand and Ireland had to be postponed due to inclement weather. However, they were able to win against Ireland. Afghanistan will need to win both of their remaining matches, one against Sri Lanka on Tuesday and one against Australia on Friday, in order to have any chance of moving to the semifinals.
