John Carew, a former Norwegian footballer, was sentenced guilty of tax fraud and received a term of fourteen months in prison as a result of the conviction.

The Norwegian tax authorities found the 43-year-old guilty of neglecting to register income between the years of 2014 and 2019, which totaled approximately 12.8 million kroner (about €1.2 million).

Even though Carew claimed that he lived in the United Kingdom, the authorities found out that he had spent more than 183 days in Norway within the period of time that was relevant.

He was also found guilty of failing to register a personal fortune that was worth more than 29 million euros (300 million kroner). Carew was given a sentence of imprisonment in addition to a fine in the amount of 540,000 kroner, which is approximately 52,000 euros.

The Oslo court said on Wednesday that the Norwegian prison service will be in charge of deciding how Carew will serve out the remainder of his sentence.

Berit Reiss-Andersen, the lawyer for the former striker, said that she and her client would look over the verdict before deciding whether or not to appeal the decision.

Reiss-Andersen reported that the court found that Carew "acted with gross negligence, but not intentionally," and she added that Carew "wanted to make amends" for his actions. The court came to the conclusion that Carew "acted with gross negligence, but not intentionally."
